“Welcome to The Dream Life Diary – Week 39”
– Journal entry, Monday 31 January 2017-
Tonight, I sat down with a cup of herbal tea to complete Step 2 ‘Find Joy’ of my Discover Yourself Online program.
The second week’s worksheet and videos guided me through a process of understanding how I know when I feel happy, and the external events that support me to feel that way.
Even though happiness comes from within, in this week we explored the feeling and sensation that causes me to know when I am actually happy. For example, I feel the sensation of happiness in my heart and chest, and it’s a fluttering light feeling.
Step 2 of the program also explored when, where I am (and what I am doing) generally when I feel a feeling of dissatisfaction or unhappiness… and then guided me on how to reframe these activities to make them more enjoyable, and even have a sense of gratitude about them.
For example, I really don’t like spending much time on my computer. And sometimes I feel unhappy and drained after too much screen time. And the way I was able to reframe it, was to be grateful that I have now designed a life where I only need to work on my laptop 2-3 hours per day.
And that I can direct my own working hours so I am thankful that I have the ability to plan plenty of breaks and nature walks throughout my day.
I truly believe there is so much power in looking at the upsides of negative situations!
For example, I think it’s so awesome when a client tells me they hate their job.
The worse it is the better!
They must think I’ve gone insane when I smile, with my headphones on at them encouragingly and exclaim “You hate your job? And it’s getting more and more unbearable? Great!”
Often they will peer at me over Skype quizzically, wondering if I’ve even heard what they’ve told me. If I have even listened to them explain to me how horrible their boss has been, how they have been undervalued and how miserable they are.
I lovingly ask them ‘Do you want to know why I think it’s so f*cking awesome you hate your job?’
And ‘do you also want to know why it’s great that it’s getting even worse?’
‘Yes!’ they tell me, looking stumped.
“Because, if you were averagely happy in that job then you would be there in that comfort zone forever!
You wouldn’t be sitting here, on this journey to find your highest potential in life and fulfilment.
You wouldn’t have followed that negative emotion into this journey of discovering what makes your soul feel alive!
How great is it to know, that your job is terrible as a gift to help give you the encouragement to find your passion!?”
They usually laugh at this point and can see the ‘cosmic joke’ of it all.
Everything is always happening for us not to us.
