EMOTIONAL DISTRACTION IS KILLING YOUR DREAMS

“Welcome to The Dream Life Diary – Week 7”

DREAM

– Journal entry, Saturday 28 May 2016 –

Today was perfect. It was an unexpected day where I had nothing planned, something that rarely happens anymore.

The serenity I felt at the end of this day of ‘nothingness’ got me thinking about the importance of creating space to feel, to think, and to allow ourselves to just be.

At night I was interviewed by a beautiful woman in the UK for the Emotional Eating Summit, and I realised how the things we are trying to cure in society are really not so much about the addiction itself, it’s about what the addiction distracts us from…. our underlying emotions.

And we don’t want to feel these emotions fully because we don’t know what to do with them (or we are afraid of what it will mean if we do).

But all emotions we are feeling really are useful.

For example, if I never had anxiety I would have never been compelled to heal myself.

If I had numbed that anxiety with pharmaceutical drugs or continued using food, alcohol and shopping as distractions then I would never have changed my life.

If my clients didn’t feel dissatisfied or lost they would do nothing to change it, and would never start working with me to create an amazing vision for their lives.

It’s like when a woman at my workshop in Melbourne last week told me she absolutely hates her job, and it’s getting unbearable and I said to her ‘Great! That means you won’t be there forever and you have to find what you love!”

How many of us are suffering from the addiction to emotional distractions because it’s easier and safer than following our hearts?

Social media, food, gossip/complaining, excessive work, sex, exercise, shopping, drinking… all ways to avoid the fact that we aren’t feeling deeply fulfilled in an area of our lives, be it our intimate relationships, career, health, or experiences we are denying ourselves.

Sure, it’s easier and safer short term to distract ourselves.

But long-term, emotional distraction is killing your dreams.

When we realise that these habits or addictions have just been smokescreens and distractions from our feelings then we can create the space to feel safe to explore what really matters and dig a little deeper.

Remember, you are the only person who has to live every single day in your life – and only you know what truly makes your heart feel alive.
