Relaunch My Life

5 THINGS HAVING A COACH HAS TAUGHT ME

Any elite athlete will tell you they didn’t achieve their goals or success alone.

They train hard, are usually supported by a great team – and the one thing all high performing athletes always have is a coach.

About 18 months ago I started working with an executive coach based in California with monthly coaching sessions via Skype.

My first session was ground breaking. I felt so relieved because for the first time in my life there was someone I could talk to that understood me, didn’t judge me and also helped me stay accountable. It was as though my dreams and goals were finally within reach.

Since working with a coach I have realised 5 things:

1) The right coach will stand out to you.

Something inside you will say ‘I can learn from this person, I respect the way they live their life and I am inspired by them.’ Don’t just settle for anyone. The right person will come to you at the right time.

2) Decide that you are worth the investment.

It’s a big decision to make the investment in working with a coach. But I can tell you that when you are invested financially as well as physically you have a recipe for success. In my opinion it’s a bigger decision not to invest in your fulfilment, goals and happiness.

3) Don’t expect to work with one coach forever.

As my dreams get bigger and my self-confidence has risen my requirements in a coach have also changed. A great coach will understand and support you when you have evolved and want to move on.

4) The right coach will show you the parts of yourself that you keep hidden.

Brilliant coaches have an incredible ability to hold up a mirror and show you things about yourself or your life from a new perspective.

Sometimes it’s uncomfortable.

Growing is usually uncomfortable.

That’s why people will make any excuse to avoid doing it.

5) A coach is friendly but isn’t usually a friend

My coach had a very direct approach with me and I have adopted the same style.

I tell my clients ‘I apologise if you think I am being direct with my questions at times, I want you to know it’s coming from the right place.’

I don’t tell my clients what they want to hear. As a life coach, telling someone what they want to hear would be like a personal trainer letting a client eat donuts while they’re on the treadmill!

And so, with only two months left ’til the end of this year, are you thinking about what you are going to do differently to set yourself on the path towards your best future in 2015?

…or are you choosing to make another excuse?
